Pakistan's newly elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his congratulatory message following Sharif's re-election.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Shehbaz Sharif expressed his appreciation on Thursday, stating, "Thank you, @narendramodi, for felicitations on my election as the Prime Minister of Pakistan."
Shehbaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) emerged victorious in the National Assembly elections securing a mandate to lead a coalition government with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's Pakistan People's Party (PPP).
Earlier, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Shehbaz Sharif on assuming office as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan. The gesture comes amidst strained relations between the two neighboring nations, adding a glimmer of hope for warming up bilateral ties to some extent.
But in his speech on the very day of reassuming power, Shehbaz Sharif drew a comparison between the Indian side of Kashmir and Palestine. As a result, Shehbaz Sharif's statement has disregarded all hope of fixing the already fragile relationship between the two nuclear neighbors.
Both New Delhi and Islamabad have terminated their high commissioner positions. Pakistan sent back the Indian High Commissioner from Islamabad to India in 2019 after the abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir.
Days after Sharif won the election with the support of the Pakistan Army as well as his elder brother and party patriarch Nawaz Sharif, Islamabad appointed Saad Ahmad Warraich as the new Charge d’Affaires (CDA) at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi for a three-year term, replacing Aizaz Khan.
In a conversation with Vygr's Managing Editor Ayanangsha Maitra in July last year, Pakistani Envoy Aizaz Khan said bilateral relations between New Delhi and Islamabad would improve and bilateral trade would boost after the election that took place on February 8.
