North Korea has launched the Hwasong-19, a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), asserting its position as a nuclear power. North Korea announced on Friday the successful launch of its latest ICBM, the Hwasong-19. The missile reached an altitude of 7,687.5 km by flying a distance of 1,001.2 km before landing in the sea between Japan and Russia.
Strategic Launch Amid Global Tensions
The missile launch occurred just days before a U.S. presidential election, drawing condemnation from the United States, South Korea, and Japan. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed the launch with his daughter and called it an “appropriate military action” in response to perceived threats. The launch also drew attention due to the recent deployment of North Korean troops to support Russia in Ukraine war which was also highly criticized.
International Responses and Concerns
The launch sparked global criticism, with U.S. and South Korean defense officials urging North Korea to pull its troops from Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy criticized what he described as his allies' "zero" response to Russia's deployment of North Korean troops in the Ukraine conflict, raising concerns that Moscow might offer sensitive military technology to Pyongyang in return. Neither Russia nor North Korea has denied the troop deployments.
