Northeastern US braces powerful 'Winter Storm' with highest snowfall in two years

On Tuesday, a fast-moving and powerful winter storm dumped heavy snow on parts of New England and New York, disrupting school and travel plans.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Nor'easter, a type of large-scale extratropical cyclone that can form in the western North Atlantic Ocean, struck the region with heavy snowfall and winds of up to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometres per hour).

The National Weather Service reported that the storm had dumped more than 30 centimetres of snow in Farmington, Connecticut and Sussex, New Jersey by midday. A strong winter storm is sweeping through the northeastern United States, bringing the highest snowfall in two years.

Tuesday is the snowiest day in New York City in two years with 3.2 inches of snow ending a 744-day snow drought of two or more inches in a single day.

1,200 Flights Canceled: Disrupting School and Travel Plans

Flightaware.com reports that during the years, over 1,100 flights to and from the airports in New York—LaGuardia, Boston Logan International, and Newark Liberty International—were either cancelled or delayed.

Schools in New York City and Boston were closed or had remote classes. Over 85,000 households in Pennsylvania and 23,000 in Massachusetts are without power, along with 4,000 in New Jersey. The storm left over a foot of snow in spots like Farmington, Connecticut, and Sussex, New Jersey. More than 2,000 trucks were clearing snow and salting streets, with officials urging property owners to clear sidewalks. Commuters were advised to work from home and avoid unnecessary travel, while power outages were significant in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

The city's emergency management agency posted on social media that "NYC remains under a Travel Advisory today as temperatures drop and snow melts, leading to the possibility of icy roads," advising drivers to drive carefully.
Throughout the region, school districts cancelled in-person classes for the day, except for New York City, which continued to hold remote classes for its one million students. Teachers and students, however, had trouble logging into the online learning environment.

New York Skyscrapers Hidden by Snow Storm

As a strong winter storm tears across the northeastern United States, footage from New York City shows the city's iconic skyline covered in snow, according to the BBC. There are areas of the state where the storm has left a blanket of snow, possibly the most in the last two years.
