Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met in Israel on March 11 to discuss regional issues and the urgent need to send humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Following the start of the Gaza conflict in October, Ajit Doval made the first official visit to Israel. Although the Israeli President and the Indian Prime Minister have spoken over the phone on several occasions, this is the first visit by a senior Indian official in the last five months.
The meeting’s details were released by the Israeli prime minister's office late on Monday night. However, the Indian side did not formally announce the visit.
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met today with Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and updated him on recent developments in the fighting in the Gaza Strip,” the Israeli Prime Minister posted on X from his official handle. “The sides also discussed the effort to release the hostages and the issue of humanitarian assistance,” he said.
Mr. Doval also met with Tzakhi Hanegbi, his Israeli counterpart, who was present during the meeting with Netanyahu. Top aides to Netanyahu were also in attendance, including the ambassador of India to Israel, the director of the National Security Council, and a foreign policy advisor.
After Hamas launched a terror attack on October 7, the Indian prime minister first showed solidarity with Israel. However as the number of casualties in Gaza increased, India continued to support the two-state solution while highlighting the necessity of humanitarian assistance to Gaza. Later, in December 2023, India supported a UN resolution urging an immediate ceasefire.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has maintained regular communication with key leaders in the region, including the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan, to advance peace and stability. Additionally, India has sent essential aid shipments to support the Palestinian population in Gaza.
