Meta, OpenAI sued over copyright infringement

Comedian Sarah Silverman and two authors have launched copyright infringement charges against Meta Platforms and OpenAI for allegedly exploiting their content without consent to train artificial intelligence language models,

According to the proposed class action lawsuits filed by Silverman, Richard Kadrey, and Christopher Golden on Friday in San Francisco federal court, the makers of ChatGPT, OpenAI, and the parent company of Facebook, Meta, allegedly utilized copyrighted content to train chatbots.

Requests for an answer on Sunday were not immediately answered by Meta or OpenAI, a private company backed by Microsoft Corp.

Silverman, Kadrey, and Christopher Golden reportedly allege Meta and OpenAI used their books without their permission to create their so-called large language models, which their creators claim as effective tools for automating tasks by imitating human conversation.

The legal battles serve as a reminder of the dangers chatbot developers face when employing a variety of copyrighted content to make programs that respond to user requests realistically.
