Clooney Leads Stars in $150M Proposal to End SAG-AFTRA Strike

In a bid to break the impasse between the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Hollywood studios, George Clooney, along with a cadre of esteemed actors including Scarlett Johansson and Tyler Perry, has stepped forward with a substantial $150 million proposal. This offer, however, faces an uphill battle, with initial responses hinting at skepticism from the union's negotiating committee.

On the 17th of October, this assembly of luminaries engaged in a virtual meeting with the SAG-AFTRA's negotiating team via Zoom. At the heart of their proposition is the elimination of a cap on membership dues for higher-income earners, a move that could potentially generate an annual influx of $50 million, amounting to a total of $150 million over the span of three years for the union.

Presently, gaining SAG-AFTRA membership necessitates a $3,000 initiation fee, coupled with an annual base fee of $231.96 along with 1.575 percent of protected earnings up to the million-dollar mark. While higher-earning members contribute more in work dues, a cap currently limits their overall contribution.

Regrettably, reports suggest that the meeting did not yield the desired outcome, with insiders indicating that the negotiating committee remained unconvinced of the validity of the proposal. They contend that the removal of the membership dues cap does not directly address the core issues stalling negotiations with the studios.

In addition to the no-cap proposal, the group recommended a bottom-up residual system, granting lower-income actors the opportunity to collect residuals before their higher-earning counterparts. Clooney emphasised the collaborative spirit behind the proposition, asserting, "A lot of the top earners want to be part of the solution," adding that they believe in contributing more to the union's cause.

Despite the divide in perspectives, it is evident that all parties are invested in finding a resolution. David Jolliffe, a member of the negotiating committee, expressed gratitude for the input, indicating a willingness to engage further with Clooney. He acknowledged the wealth of ideas and the collective commitment to closing the gap on actors' compensation.

The SAG-AFTRA strike, which commenced on the 19th of July, aligned the union with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) in their pursuit of equitable agreements. Notably, the WGA recently reached a resolution with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), concluding their strike after 146 days.

Central to SAG-AFTRA's demands are amplified wages, augmented streaming residuals, and enhanced working conditions. The stakes are high, and the outcome of these negotiations holds implications not only for the union and studios but for the broader entertainment industry as a whole. As deliberations continue, the hope remains that a mutually beneficial accord can be reached, fostering a more harmonious and equitable landscape for all involved.
