BuzzFeed.com's Pulitzer Prize-winning news division is set to be shut down in a surprising development for the global media industry. According to a memo shared with The Verge, BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti stated that while the company is experiencing layoffs in nearly all departments, it can no longer sustain BuzzFeed News as a separate entity. The company will instead focus on HuffPost, which it acquired in 2020, as its main news brand. The memo also revealed plans to reduce staff numbers by 15% across the business, content, tech, and admin teams and to consider headcount reductions in certain international markets.

The CEO stated, "Employees who are affected, except for those in BuzzFeed News, will soon receive an email from HR. If you are receiving this message from me, it means that you are not affected by the changes that took place today. Regarding BuzzFeed News, we have initiated talks with the News Guild about these measures."
