Apple Makes History By Exporting $1 Billion Worth iPhones In A Month From India

Apple has made history by becoming the first company to export smartphones worth $1 billion in a single month in India. The California based-smartphone giant exported iPhones worth Rs 8,100 crore in December 2022, taking the smartphone export tally to Rs 10,000 crore, reported by Economic Times.

Samsung and Apple have been leading mobile exporters in India. Samsung dominated the market as the leading exporter of smartphones until Apple overtook it in November.

Apple is currently manufacturing iPhones 12, 13, 14 and 14+ in India. Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron are contract manufacturers for iPhones in the country.

Foxconn and Pegatron facilities are located in Tamil Nadu. Wistron’s facility is located in Karnataka. The contract manufacturers are working under the PLI scheme of the government.

India is looking to gain a fair share of the smartphone and electronics manufacture. The government estimates India’s mobile export to reach $9 billion for FY23, 35% higher than $5.8 billion in FY22, as reported by ET Now.

According to Department of Commerce, export of electronic goods including smartphones between April and December 2022 reached $16.7 billion, an increase of 51.56% in the same period from the previous year, reported by ET Now.

This major export is a positive to the ‘Make-In-India’ campaign of the government where it is promoting Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes to manufacturers. Increase in manufacturing for exports is likely to create more jobs amidst dark times for the job market.
