Air India Express cabin crew strike comes to an end, terminated employees to be reinstated

After several days of disruption, Air India Express has reached an agreement with its cabin crew, leading to the termination of the strike. The airline has consented to reinstate the 25 cabin crew members who were previously terminated. This decision follows a meeting mediated by the Chief Labour Commissioner (CLC) held in New Delhi on May 9.

In the mediated discussions, the airline management has committed to addressing the concerns raised by the cabin crew regarding alleged discrimination stemming from the merger with former AirAsia India and the elimination of allowances. The Chief Labour Commissioner has scheduled another meeting for May 28 to further deliberate on these matters.

During the protest, which spanned three days with cabin crew members reporting "sick" from May 6 onwards, Air India Express was compelled to cancel 85 flights across its network. To mitigate the impact, Air India, another Tata Group airline, supported it by operating flights on 20 of its routes, as per a statement released by Air India Express.

The catalyst for the conciliation meeting was the significant number of cabin crew members reporting "sick," which led to disruptions in flight operations starting May 6.

In response to the termination notices issued to some cabin crew members on May 8, the airline cited the act of reporting sick as a concerted action to disrupt services, asserting it violated company service rules and applicable laws.

Air India Express cabin crew dissatisfaction with treatment towards former AirAsia India employees led to disparities in postings and contractual terms. The privatisation of Air India and its subsidiary, Air India Express, led to Tata Sons' acquisition, merging Air India and Air India Express.

Conclusion:

With the resolution of the strike and ongoing discussions to address the cabin crew's concerns, Air India Express aims to restore normalcy to its operations and uphold its commitment to employee welfare in collaboration with the regulatory authorities.
