The cancellation of over 36 trains between Ahmedabad and Mumbai by Western Railways has led to a significant increase in airfares for the same route. While the usual fare for this journey is around Rs 3,000, the current prices have surged to nearly Rs 12,000! This sudden rise in airfares is a direct result of a 56-hour megablock scheduled just before the festival of Rakshabandhan on the Surat-Udhna route. The megablock is aimed at adding a third railway track and will be in effect from August 26 to August 28.
The disruption has impacted about 75,000 passengers who had planned to travel during this time for Rakshabandhan. Many passengers expressed their frustration, stating that they would have explored other options if they had been informed about the cancellations earlier. With flight prices now two to five times higher, it has become unaffordable for some passengers.
Jitendra Jayant, the PRO of Western Railways, assured affected passengers that they would receive a refund. Online bookings will be refunded directly to bank accounts, while those who purchased tickets at the window can present tickets there for a refund.
