First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train in UP: Varanasi-Delhi Service to Start November 2

Uttar Pradesh is set to get its first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, connecting Varanasi with New Delhi through an overnight service. Flagged off by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the semi-high-speed train will begin regular commercial operations on November 2, 2026. With modern amenities, improved passenger comfort and four important stoppages, the new service is expected to transform overnight rail travel between eastern Uttar Pradesh and the national capital.

The Indian Railways has taken another significant step towards modernising long-distance rail travel with the launch of the Varanasi-New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper Express. Designed to make overnight journeys faster and more comfortable, the new train will connect two important destinations while improving railway connectivity for passengers across Uttar Pradesh.

The train was flagged off from Varanasi on Saturday, October 31, by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. It is the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train in Uttar Pradesh and the second such service in the country.

Regular passenger services are scheduled to commence on Monday, November 2. The development is particularly important for travellers who frequently commute between Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Delhi and nearby cities.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: When Will Regular Services Begin?

Following its inauguration, the Varanasi-New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper train will enter regular commercial operation from November 2, 2026.

The Northern Railway zone will be responsible for operating and maintaining the service. The introduction of a dedicated sleeper version of Vande Bharat is expected to provide passengers with an alternative to conventional overnight trains, particularly those looking for improved onboard facilities and reduced travel time.

The train has been introduced at a time when the two existing Vande Bharat Chair Car services operating between Varanasi and New Delhi are reportedly witnessing full occupancy. The additional service is therefore expected to provide more travel options and help accommodate growing passenger demand.

Varanasi-New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: Route and Stoppages

The new Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will cover approximately 760 kilometres between Varanasi and New Delhi. It will operate via Kanpur Central, connecting several important cities and railway stations along the route.

The train will have four scheduled stoppages between its originating and destination stations:

  • Prayagraj

  • Kanpur Central

  • Aligarh

  • Ghaziabad

These stops are strategically important because they provide connectivity to passengers from several surrounding districts.

For pilgrims, the route offers convenient access to two of India's prominent religious destinations: Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi and the Sangam in Prayagraj. Students, business travellers, tourists and working professionals travelling towards Delhi will also benefit from the additional overnight connectivity.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Timings: Varanasi to Delhi and Return

One of the biggest advantages of the new Vande Bharat Sleeper train is its overnight schedule. Passengers will be able to board the train in the evening, travel overnight and reach their destination the following morning.

The service will operate six days a week in both directions, with different weekly off-days.

Varanasi to New Delhi (Train No. 27421)

  • Departure from Varanasi: 8:50 PM

  • Arrival at New Delhi: 6:10 AM the following day

  • Operating days: Six days a week

  • Weekly off: Friday

New Delhi to Varanasi (Train No. 27422)

  • Departure from New Delhi: 9:40 PM

  • Arrival at Varanasi: 7:10 AM the following day

  • Operating days: Six days a week

  • Weekly off: Saturday

The overnight schedule is designed to help passengers make better use of their daytime hours. Instead of spending a substantial part of the day travelling, passengers can complete the journey while resting and arrive at their destination in the morning.

The journey is expected to take approximately 9 hours and 20 minutes from Varanasi to New Delhi and around 9 hours and 30 minutes in the return direction.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Features: What Will Passengers Get?

Unlike the existing Vande Bharat Chair Car trains, the sleeper version has been specifically designed for long-distance overnight journeys.

The 16-coach train will have a total passenger capacity of 823. Its accommodation will be divided into three air-conditioned categories:

  • First AC (1AC): One coach with 24 berths.

  • Second AC (2AC): Four coaches with 188 berths.

  • Third AC (3AC): Eleven coaches with 611 berths.

The train's design speed is up to 180 kmph, although its actual operating speed will depend on route conditions and railway regulations.

Passenger comfort has been given considerable attention. Ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning, better suspension and enhanced noise insulation are intended to make overnight journeys more comfortable.

Other notable features include automatic passenger doors, flexible gangways, LED lighting and integrated passenger information systems. These facilities are designed to improve convenience while allowing passengers to move more smoothly between coaches.

Modern Amenities and Passenger Convenience

The Vande Bharat Sleeper train will offer several facilities intended to improve the experience of long-distance rail passengers.

These include vacuum-based odour-free toilets, spacious luggage storage areas and multiple charging options. Passengers will have access to three-pin charging sockets, USB Type-A and Type-C ports, making it easier to charge electronic devices during the journey.

The train will also feature Wi-Fi routers, improved lighting and enhanced noise insulation.

First AC passengers will have access to hot-water shower facilities, an additional convenience for travellers undertaking overnight journeys.

Special berths and accessible toilet facilities have also been incorporated for passengers with disabilities.

The train's facilities are intended to address some of the common concerns associated with long-distance overnight travel, including cleanliness, sleeping comfort, accessibility and onboard convenience.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Safety Features

Passenger safety is another important aspect of the new service. The train incorporates several advanced systems designed to strengthen onboard security and emergency response.

One of its key safety features is Kavach, India's indigenous train collision avoidance system, which is designed to help prevent certain train accidents through automatic protection mechanisms.

Additional safety provisions include:

  • Fire detection systems and fire barrier doors.

  • CCTV cameras for onboard monitoring.

  • Passenger emergency alarm systems.

  • Disaster management lighting.

  • Advanced communication and passenger information systems.

  • Crash-compliant coach design.

The train also incorporates regenerative braking technology and an aerodynamic exterior design. Together, these engineering features are intended to support operational efficiency and a smoother passenger experience.

Vande Bharat Sleeper vs Shiv Ganga Express: How Much Time Will Passengers Save?

The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is also expected to make the Varanasi-Delhi railway corridor more time-efficient.

Compared with the existing Shiv Ganga Express, the new service is expected to reduce journey time by approximately 55 minutes when travelling from Varanasi to New Delhi.

Passengers travelling in the opposite direction are expected to save around 35 minutes.

While these reductions may appear modest, they can make a meaningful difference for passengers travelling frequently for work, education, business or personal commitments.

Combined with the improved onboard facilities, the shorter journey is expected to make the new train an attractive option for overnight travel.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Ticket Booking: How to Reserve Your Seat

Passengers will be able to book tickets for the Varanasi-New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper train through online and offline reservation facilities.

For online reservations, travellers can use:

  • The official IRCTC website.

  • The IRCTC Rail Connect mobile application.

  • The RailOne application.

Passengers who prefer offline reservations can visit Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at railway stations.

Ticket bookings are expected to open shortly ahead of regular commercial operations.

The train will offer three accommodation categories: First AC, Second AC and Third AC. Passengers will be able to select their preferred class depending on their budget and travel requirements.

The final fare details should be checked through official railway reservation channels before booking, as confirmed ticket prices have not been established in the information currently available.

How Will the New Train Benefit Purvanchal and Uttar Pradesh?

The Varanasi-New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper service is more than just another addition to India's premium train network. It represents an important improvement in connectivity for eastern Uttar Pradesh and the wider Purvanchal region.

Varanasi attracts millions of visitors because of its religious, cultural and historical significance. The city is home to the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple and is an important destination for domestic and international tourists.

Prayagraj, another major stop along the route, holds immense religious importance because of the Sangam. The new train will provide a convenient overnight travel option for pilgrims visiting these destinations.

Beyond religious tourism, improved connectivity could also benefit students, working professionals, entrepreneurs and business travellers who regularly travel between eastern Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

The service is also expected to strengthen the broader Vande Bharat Sleeper network, extending modern overnight rail travel to another important corridor.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Connects Tradition with Modern Rail Travel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the launch, highlighting the importance of connecting Kashi, Prayagraj and Delhi through a modern railway service. He emphasised that the train would make travel more convenient for devotees, tourists, young people and business travellers.

The launch reflects the broader ambition of Indian Railways to upgrade passenger services through modern trains, improved infrastructure and advanced safety technology.

For passengers travelling between Varanasi and New Delhi, the biggest attraction will be the combination of an overnight timetable, dedicated sleeper accommodation and modern onboard facilities.

With regular operations scheduled to begin on November 2, 2026, the Varanasi-New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper train is poised to become an important addition to Uttar Pradesh's railway network. Its success could also strengthen demand for more modern sleeper services on other busy long-distance routes across the country.
