Nvidia Constructs Israel's Most Powerful AI Supercomputer to Meet Growing Demand

The cloud-based system, which will require a significant investment of hundreds of millions of dollars, is expected to be partially operational by the conclusion of 2023. Nvidia, the globally renowned chip company, holds the distinction of being the most valuable listed company in its field.Nvidia Corporation is constructing Israel's most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer in response to the increasing customer need for AI applications. Nvidia's Senior Vice President, Gilad Shainer, revealed that Nvidia has collaborated with 800 startups and tens of thousands of software engineers in Israel.

The upcoming system, named Israel-1, aims to provide exceptional AI computing capabilities, boasting a performance of up to eight exaflops. This will position it as one of the most powerful AI supercomputers worldwide. To put it into perspective, a single exaflop has the capacity to execute one quintillion calculations per second, equivalent to 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 calculations.Shainer emphasized the significance of AI as the "most crucial technology in our lifetime," stressing the necessity of large-scale graphics processing units (GPUs) for the development of AI and generative AI applications.According to Shainer's statements to Reuters, generative AI is becoming ubiquitous, requiring the capability to process substantial datasets for training purposes. He further highlighted that companies in Israel will gain access to a supercomputer that was previously unavailable to them.

The newly developed system is designed to facilitate faster training, enabling the creation of frameworks and solutions capable of tackling more complex problems.Notably, Nvidia GPUs played a crucial role in the development of OpenAI's ChatGPT, which relies on thousands of these GPUs.It is worth mentioning that the system was developed by the former Mellanox team. Nvidia acquired Israeli chip designer Mellanox Technologies in 2019 for an approximate sum of $7 billion, successfully outbidding Intel Corp.
