Sources with direct knowledge of the matter have revealed that Pegatron Corp, a Taiwanese supplier for Apple Inc, is in talks to establish a second factory in India. This move comes as Apple's partners continue to seek alternatives to China for their production needs. Pegatron's new facility is expected to be located near Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu and would be the company's second factory in India, following a $150 million investment made just six months ago.
India is viewed as the next area of expansion for Apple, with over $9 billion in smartphone exports from the country between April 2022 and February 2023, of which iPhones accounted for over half. Pegatron currently produces 10% of Apple's iPhone output in India, according to Counterpoint research. In addition to iPhone production, Apple also intends to assemble iPad tablets and AirPods in India, which is the second-largest smartphone market in the world.
