3,400 detonators seized in Birbhum District ahead of Amit Shah's visit to Bengal

On Thursday, a significant amount of explosive materials was discovered in a car in Birbhum district, West Bengal, just one day before Union Minister Amit Shah's scheduled visit to the area to celebrate Bengali New Year. Local residents noticed a Scorpio car parked near a brick kiln next to Guslara bypass and reported it to the Murarai police when no one claimed ownership of the vehicle. Upon inspection, the police found 17 boxes, each containing around 200 gelatin sticks, and called in a bomb squad to safely defuse the explosives. The Birbhum Police have initiated an investigation, but no arrests have been made yet.

This incident follows a similar case in July of last year when the West Bengal Special Task Force intercepted a pick-up van allegedly transporting 81,000 detonators in the Mahammad Bazaar area of Birbhum district. Three people were initially arrested in connection with the case, and the police suspected that the individuals were planning an explosion. However, their plan was foiled. In response to the recent discovery of explosive materials, the Union Home Ministry instructed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to conduct an investigation. The NIA has since arrested five individuals in connection with the case, and their investigation is still ongoing. The West Bengal police have also discovered an additional 3,400 gelatin sticks, which the NIA has taken note of.
