Haldwani protests get support from locals as thousands fight to keep their abode

Thousands of people in Uttarakhand's Haldwani are protesting against a high court order which directed Railway authorities to evict them from their land for 'alleged' encroachment. The protesters claim that the removal of encroachments will make them homeless and put their children's futures in jeopardy. More than 50,000 locals will be affected by the high court's decision.

Before the process of removing encroachments from the land begins, residents have been asked to give the administration their licensed weapons. The high court's order has been challenged in a petition to the Supreme Court, which will hear the case on January 5. Opposition parties have sprung in support of the protesting residents.

Some new media channels have started relating it to the Shaheen Bagh protests.

The Shaheen Bagh protests were a series of sit-in protests that took place in the Shaheen Bagh neighborhood of Delhi, India in 2019 and 2020. The protests were organized by Muslim women and were sparked by the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which critics argue is discriminatory against Muslims and could be used to strip citizenship from some members of the community.

The protests, which were led by women, were largely peaceful and attracted widespread attention and support from across India. The protesters demanded the repeal of the CAA and the withdrawal of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which would require all Indians to provide documents proving their citizenship. The protests ended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
