Glowing for Safety: Radium Bands Placed on Stray Cows to Prevent Accidents in Budhni

Stray cattle wandering on roads during the dark hours have long been a major cause of severe traffic accidents across India. However, a unique and practical initiative has recently been launched in Budhni, Madhya Pradesh, to tackle this persistent issue and ensure the safety of both animals and commuters.

• The Problem: The increasing number of accidents caused by poor visibility of stray cows on the roads at night prompted local authorities and volunteers to find a solution.

• The Solution: A special campaign has been initiated to place bright, reflective "radium bands" (collars) around the necks of cows roaming the streets.

• How it Works: These radium bands glow brightly in the dark when illuminated by vehicle headlights. This allows drivers to spot the animals from a significant distance, giving them ample time to slow down and avoid a collision.

• Dual Purpose: The campaign's objective is twofold: it aims to protect Gau Mata (Mother Cow) from fatal injuries while simultaneously ensuring the safety of drivers and pedestrians on the road.

Alongside this effort, an appeal has been issued to the public, urging them to drive with caution, especially at night, and to actively support such grassroots safety initiatives.
