Sudan building catches fire as conflicts continue

A devastating conflict that has lasted for more than six months is raging in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. The fighting initially erupted on April 15th, triggered by a power struggle between the Sudanese army's leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

The clashes have resulted in widespread destruction, with several key buildings in central Khartoum, including the iconic Greater Nile Petroleum Oil Company Tower, going up in flames. The Tower, characterized by its distinctive conical structure and glass facades, had long been a symbol of the city.

The Greater Nile Petroleum Oil Company Tower is a prominent skyscraper located in Khartoum, Sudan, near the River Nile. The Tower is characterised by its distinctive conical or cone-like structure, which sets it apart from conventional rectangular or square skyscrapers. It features modern architectural elements with a glass facade. The building stands 18 storeys tall, making it one of the prominent structures in the Khartoum skyline.

The conflict has exacted a heavy toll on both civilians and infrastructure. The true number is likely higher, as many casualties don't make it to hospitals or morgues. Over one million people have been forced to flee their homes, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.

The situation remains volatile, with battles between the regular army and the RSF continuing. Residents in various parts of Khartoum report hearing explosions and witnessing intense clashes. Meanwhile, key institutions and infrastructure in the city continue to be destroyed, compounding the suffering of the population.

Overall, Sudan's ongoing conflict has had devastating consequences, including significant loss of life, displacement, and the destruction of vital infrastructure, leaving the country in a state of crisis with no immediate resolution in sight.
