Amid Israel-Hamas war entering into its third week, on December 9, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in discussions with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh. During their telephonic conversation, Mr. Jaishankar Jaishankar reiterated India’s long-standing position on the Palestine issue.
On X, Mr. Jaishankar conveyed, "Had a conversation with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh this evening [Saturday].
He added on X, “He [Mohammad Shtayyeh] expressed deep concerns about the situations in Gaza and the West Bank. Reiterated India’s unwavering position on Palestine. Agreed to stay in contact."
This comes the day after Minister Jaishankar, while addressing the Parliament stressed India's ongoing worry about the worsening security situation from the Hamas-Israel conflict. He urged "restraint and de-escalation" and emphasised the need for a peaceful resolution through "dialogue and diplomacy."
“We remain concerned at the deteriorating security situation and have called for restraint, de-escalation and emphasised peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy," Jaishankar said in a written reply to a question.
PM Modi with Palestinian PM
During a press briefing on October 12, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, emphasised that India's stance on the Palestine issue is both "longstanding and consistent."
Bagchi reiterated India's continuous support for the resumption of direct negotiations, aiming to establish a sovereign, independent, and viable state of Palestine. The objective is for this state to coexist peacefully with Israel within secure and recognized borders. Bagchi affirmed that India's position on this matter remains the same.
Earlier in October, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences to the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, expressing sympathy for the lives lost at Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza.
During the conversation, PM Modi restated India's commitment to offering humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. Additionally, he reiterated India's enduring principled stance on the Israel-Palestine issue.
PM Modi shared on X that he had a conversation with President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority, expressing condolences for the civilian lives lost at Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza. Modi affirmed India's commitment to providing ongoing humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.
