Tragedy struck in Massachusetts, where a wealthy Indian-origin couple, Rakesh Kamal (57) and Teena (54), along with their 18-year-old daughter, Ariana, were discovered dead in their $5 million mansion.
Reports indicate that this incident, suspected to involve domestic violence, unfolded in Dover, which is located approximately 32 kilometres southwest of Boston, in the capital of Massachusetts, around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, as revealed by Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey.
Details given by Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey
District Attorney Michael Morrissey, describing the event as a "terrible tragedy" linked to domestic violence, noted the finding of a gun near the husband's body.
Specifics regarding the cause of death are undisclosed. No specifics regarding whether all three family members were shot and by whom were undisclosed too.
He conveyed that a determination of murder-suicide could only be made following the medical examiner's ruling. The discovery of their bodies happened when a relative, alarmed by not hearing from them for one or two days, visited to check on the family members.
He said, "There have been no police reports, no problems, no domestic issues—nothing at that house or in the entire neighborhood that I'm aware of," Expressing condolences, he said, "This is very unfortunate, and our heart goes out to the entire Kamal family on this tragedy."
Morrissey added that he dislikes seeing such incidents of domestic violence anytime, noting that tensions in relationships often escalate around the holidays. He mentioned that the investigation into the slayings is ongoing, with investigators working at the crime scene through much of the night.
“Although the investigation is at a very preliminary stage, the evidence available at this time does not indicate the involvement of any outside party, but suggests that this is a deadly incident of domestic violence,” his office said in a statement.
“It is not believed that there is any ongoing danger to the Dover community related to this incident.”
The ongoing investigation indicates that, at this stage, there is no apparent involvement of an outside party. Instead, the preliminary evidence suggests a "deadly incident of domestic violence," as stated by the district attorney.
The Rich Kamals were Facing Financial Problems
Approximately a year ago, the family's expensive mansion, valued at an estimated USD 5.45 million, faced foreclosure and was subsequently sold to Wilsondale Associates LLC, a Massachusetts-based entity, for USD 3 million, as reported by The Post.
Records indicate that the Kamals acquired the 19,000-square-foot estate with 11 bedrooms for USD 4 million in 2019, according to media reports. At the time of the tragic incident, the slain family members were the sole occupants of the mansion, as mentioned by the district attorney, who described the area, one of the wealthiest in the state, as "a nice neighborhood, a safe community."
Teena Kamal was identified as the Chief Operating Officer of EduNova, listed on the company's website. Her profile highlighted her as an alumna of Harvard University and Delhi University in India. She served on the board of directors for the American Red Cross of Massachusetts, had an online bio emphasizing her extensive experience of over three decades in the education and technology industries.
Rakesh Kamal, according to his EduNova biography, was an alumnus of Boston University, MIT Sloan School of Management, and Stanford University. Before joining EduNova, he had a history of holding various executive positions in the education-consulting field, as detailed in his biography on the website.
The couple's daughter was enrolled at Middlebury College, a private liberal arts school in Vermont with a yearly tuition of USD 64,800, where she pursued studies in neuroscience, as indicated on her LinkedIn profile.
EduNova, as reported by The Boston Globe, promoted a "student success system" aimed at enhancing the academic performance of students in middle school, high school, and college.
Online records indicate that the couple faced financial difficulties in recent years. Teena Kamal filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in September 2022, citing liabilities between USD 1 million and USD 10 million. However, the case was dismissed two months later due to insufficient documentation. Although their company was established in 2016, state records show that it was dissolved in December 2021.
District Attorney Morrissey highlighted the rarity of violent situations, stating that not a single homicide case has been reported in Dover since 2020. Additionally, he mentioned that, in his entire 12-year tenure, he has never worked on such a case from the neighborhood. Morrissey emphasised that this kind of violence is uncommon, not just in Dover but in any community in Norfolk County, making it particularly exceptional for Dover.
