Chile- (Vygr)—A large earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 hit northern Chile on Thursday. Concern was raised throughout the region when the US Geological Survey reported the earthquake.
Where It Happened
The coastal city of Antofagasta is located 265 kilometres east of the epicentre of the earthquake. It happened 126 kilometres below the surface, deep below the earth. The impact on the surface might have been lessened by this depth.
No immediate danger reported
President Gabriel Boric shared an update on social media, saying:
"So far there are no reports of injuries or major damage, but teams are gathering information."

This initial report brings some relief, though authorities continue to assess the situation.
Chile: A Quake-Prone Country
A region known for its frequent earthquakes, the "Ring of Fire" encompasses Chile. Because of its location between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain range, the nation frequently experiences earthquakes.

Past Disasters
An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile in 2010. That one was more serious. Villages along the coast were devastated by the tsunami that resulted from that event. The calamity claimed the lives of 520 people, tragically.

Nearby Countries
Thursday's earthquake happened close to Chile's borders with other South American nations. It was roughly 80 kilometres from Argentina and 32 kilometres from Bolivia. The effects of the quake may have been felt in these neighbouring countries as well.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and gather more information about the impact of this significant seismic event.
