Inter Miami CF celebrated Lionel Messi's eighth Ballon d'Or award with an exhibition match against New York City FC on Friday, November 10, 2023. Messi led Inter Miami to a 2-1 victory, scoring a goal and assisting on the other.
The match was a sellout, with over 18,000 fans attending at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The crowd was electric, and they gave Messi a standing ovation when he was introduced before the match.
Messi played the entire first half and the first 15 minutes of the second half. He scored his goal in the 15th minute, converting a penalty kick. He assisted on Inter Miami's second goal in the 30th minute, passing the ball to Blaise Matuidi, who scored from close range.
New York City FC scored a consolation goal in the 70th minute, but Inter Miami held on for the victory.
After the match, Messi was presented with a replica of the Ballon d'Or trophy by Inter Miami co-owners Jorge and Jose Mas. Messi thanked the fans for their support and said that he was honored to play for Inter Miami.
"I'm very happy to be here," Messi said. "I'm very happy to be playing for this team. And I'm very happy to be celebrating my Ballon d'Or award with all of you."
