From Space Explorers to Leaders: Diwali Lights Up Everywhere!

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who has spent nearly five months aboard the International Space Station (ISS), extended heartfelt Diwali wishes to those celebrating both in the United States and worldwide. In a video message broadcasted from the ISS, the Indian-origin astronaut reflected on her unique experience of observing the festival from 260 miles above Earth. She fondly remembered her father's dedication to preserving their cultural roots by teaching her and her family about Diwali and other Indian festivals.

"Greetings from the ISS," Williams stated. "I want to extend my warmest wishes for a Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating today at the White House and around the world." She emphasised that Diwali signifies hope and renewal, describing it as a joyful occasion when goodness prevails.

Gratitude to US Leaders

In her message, Williams expressed gratitude to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their participation in Diwali celebrations and for acknowledging the contributions of the Indian American community. "Thank you to the President and the Vice President for celebrating Diwali with our community today and for recognising the many contributions of our community," she noted. This message resonated during a special Diwali event held at the White House, attended by prominent Indian Americans.

Biden Celebrates Diwali at the White House

President Biden marked Diwali with a significant celebration at the White House, attended by over 600 distinguished Indian Americans. In his address, he highlighted the importance of the occasion, saying, "As President, I have been honoured to host the biggest Diwali receptions ever at the White House. To me, it means a great deal." He praised South Asian Americans for their integral role in his administration and expressed pride in maintaining a diverse cabinet.

During the event, Biden lit a diya in the Blue Room and acknowledged the South Asian American community's contributions to American democracy. He recalled the inaugural Diwali celebration at the White House in 2016, reflecting on the challenges faced by immigrants and the importance of inclusivity in American society.

Continued Work in Space

Williams, along with fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, has been at the ISS since June, following their launch aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. While the spacecraft was initially intended for a week-long test flight, the decision was made to extend their mission until February 2025 due to safety concerns regarding their return to Earth.

As Diwali celebrations continue, Williams's message from space serves as a reminder of the festival's enduring significance and the unity it fosters among communities worldwide.
