Elon Musk Plans to Give Every Child in America a SpaceX Share in 2027: What the Pledge Means

Elon Musk has made a very large promise in very few words. In a post on X on Monday, he wrote: “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.”

It is a short post with a long list of unanswered questions.

Where it came from

The pledge followed an announcement by AI company Anthropic. On Sunday, Anthropic said it would commit 5 per cent of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval, with the possibility of adding more as the company’s value rises. The fund could support nonprofit donations, “direct distributions to specific populations” and work on AI’s impact on workers.

Musk replied that he recommended “giving the shares directly to the public”. Then, hours later, he wrote that this was what he would do, and followed with the SpaceX pledge.

The numbers

The United States has about 72 million people under 18, based on census data. A SpaceX share has recently traded at around $146 to $147. On those figures, one share per child would come to about $10.5 billion to $11 billion.

That sounds like a lot, but it is a small slice of what Musk owns. Reports citing CNBC say he holds about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, rising to about 6.4 billion once unvested awards and options are counted. Giving 72 million shares would be roughly 1 to 1.5 per cent of his stake. For each child, the gift would be worth about $146.

What Musk hasn’t said

The post leaves nearly everything open:

  • Who counts? “Every kid in America” could mean US citizens under 18, all children living in the country, or something narrower.
  • How would it work? Delivering shares to tens of millions of minors would involve brokerage or custodial accounts, identity checks and parental consent, none of which Musk has described.
  • When in 2027? No date was given.
  • Where will the shares come from? Musk says they will be “one of my SpaceX shares”, but the structure, such as a trust or foundation, is unstated.
  • What are the strings? It is unclear whether the shares could be sold, and when.

A post on X is also not a legal commitment. Until a structure is announced, it remains a pledge.

The backdrop

SpaceX went public in June 2026 and drew enormous attention, with Musk briefly becoming the first person worth more than a trillion dollars. The stock then fell, and by the following month it had pulled him back below that mark.

Anthropic’s fund and Musk’s pledge also arrive at a moment when technology companies face questions about whether the benefits of the AI boom and of big tech fortunes are shared widely. The idea of giving the public a direct stake in successful companies has a growing audience, though how it would be done well is still being debated.

What it could mean in practice

If carried out, the gift would put a small stake in one of the world’s best-known companies into the hands of millions of children, and could prompt some families to open investment accounts for the first time. It would also tie millions of households to SpaceX’s share price, in both rising and falling markets.

For readers in India, the pledge as worded concerns children in the US, and nothing suggests it would reach children elsewhere.

What to watch

The details of eligibility and delivery, any legal filings or a foundation set up for the purpose, and whether other billionaires respond with similar pledges.
