Buenos Aires Riots: Argentines Protest the President's Economic Reforms

Argentina: Violent protests have erupted in Buenos Aires as Argentina's Senate debates the adoption of an important bill that would progress President Javier Milei's economic reforms. On Wednesday, thousands of protesters gathered near the country's dome-shaped Congress building to protest the proposed strict measures outlined in the comprehensive bill. The demonstrators in Buenos Aires believe that President Javier Milei’s economic reform plans will hurt millions of Argentines.

What are these Economic Reforms?

Mr Milei was appointed as President during a grave economic crisis, which he is still trying to resolve after six months in government. Annual inflation is currently approaching 300%, and more than half of Argentines are living in poverty. His economic reforms are now aiming at reviving the country's flagging economy by:

  • declaring a state of economic emergency
  • cutting down pensions
  • watering down labour rights

The demonstrators are concerned that this will leave them even more vulnerable to rising unemployment and inflation. Leftist political parties of the Opposition, labour unions, and various social organizations staunchly oppose these measures.

Riot Police dispersing the herd of protestors

Riot police, equipped with helmets, batons, and clear plastic shields, arrived to disperse the crowd. They used tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons to spray demonstrators clothed against the winter cold. Authorities reported that the violence injured at least 20 police officers and resulted in the detention of more than a dozen demonstrators.
