Argentina stuck with 'Severe Storm', at least 13 dead

In the Argentina port city of Bahia Blanca, a powerful storm, with locals calling it ‘tornado’, resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 13 people on Saturday, as reported by authorities. The fatalities occurred when the roof of a sports club collapsed, due to winds surpassing 140 kilometres (87 miles) per hour in certain areas of the city, triggering an orange alert, even causing power outages. 

The tragic incident occurred at 8 pm local time on Saturday, December 16, in the city of Bahia Blanca, the city is situated near the southern tip of Buenos Aires province. Reports indicate that a roller-skating display was in progress at the club when the tragedy occurred.

Local mayor Federico Susbielles, expressing profound sorrow, announced on social media, "It is with great pain that I have to say that the deaths of 13 people have been confirmed." He urged the public to take extreme care and not travel on public roads.

"Faced with the catastrophe in the city, the entire government team, together with the police, civil defence, traffic chiefs, firefighters and the army, are working to assist those who need it,” he added.

“Unfortunately, the emergency service confirms the death of 13 people in the Bahiense del Norte club, " The municipality conveyed in a statement. It added firefighters are actively engaged at the site, working to rescue individuals who are trapped under rubble.

President Javier Milei of Argentina extended condolences to the victims' families, expressing deep regret over the storm's impact.

He said in a statement, "I deeply regret the victims that this storm caused in Bahía Blanca and I send my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected. We will provide information as we have it. We ask everyone who is in risk areas to stay in their homes,"

In a tweet, the president's office stated, "The national government is closely monitoring the situation caused by the electrical storm in Buenos Aires province."
