The Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958, in six police stations across five districts in Manipur — Imphal West, Imphal East, Jiribam, Kangpokpi, and Bishnupur. This extension will remain in effect until March 31, 2025, unless withdrawn earlier.
Areas Affected by AFSPA Reimposition
AFSPA was reinstated in specific police station areas: Sekmai and Lamsang in Imphal West, Lamlai in Imphal East, Jiribam in Jiribam, Leimakhong in Kangpokpi, and Moirang in Bishnupur. The decision follows the state's recent move to impose AFSPA across Manipur, excluding 19 police stations.
Rising Violence and Protests
Violent incidents have surged, including a gunfight in Jiribam district where security forces killed 11 suspected militants, and the abduction of six civilians. Over 200 people have been killed in ethnic violence since last year, mainly between Meiteis in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo communities in the hills.
24-Hour Shutdown in Imphal Valley
In response to escalating violence, 13 civil society organizations called for a 24-hour shutdown in Imphal Valley. The groups condemned the government’s inaction in addressing recent attacks and killings, leading to deserted markets, closed schools, and halted public transport.
Memorandum Submitted to Governor
The civil bodies submitted a memorandum to the Governor with demands, including the rescue of hostages, improved security measures, and reassessment of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact. Leaders warned that continued government inaction could lead to intensified protests, calling for the withdrawal of national political parties from Manipur.
