A routine commute on Mumbai's "lifeline" turned into a scene of horror on Tuesday night.
Mayank Lohar, a 22-year-old salesman, was stabbed to death inside a first-class compartment of a Churchgate–Nalasopara fast local train.
The fatal altercation began when Mayank asked a fellow passenger, 30-year-old Roshan Suvarna, to shut the train door to keep out lashing rain.
What started as a minor dispute escalated rapidly. Suvarna, who had allegedly been drinking, pulled a knife from his bag and attacked Mayank, stabbing him multiple times in the abdomen and chest before jumping off the train at Borivali station.
Mayank tragically succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
In a swift response, the Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP) analyzed over 40 CCTV feeds and technical evidence to track down and arrest Suvarna in Panvel within 24 hours as he attempted to flee to Mangaluru.
This incident has sparked widespread public concern regarding passenger safety and the need for stricter security in Mumbai’s suburban rail network.
Our thoughts go out to Mayank's family during this heartbreaking time.
