Are you being overcharged at your local store?
A major verdict from the Consumer Commission in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, has sent a strong message to retailers and companies alike.
After a customer challenged a shopkeeper for charging ₹20 above the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on a packet of cigarettes, the commission ruled in the consumer's favor.
Not only was the shopkeeper ordered to refund the extra amount, but the commission also imposed a massive ₹10 lakh penalty on both the retailer and the cigarette manufacturing company to be deposited into the Consumer Welfare Fund.
This case serves as a powerful reminder: selling any product above the printed MRP is illegal, and consumers have the power to take legal action.
