The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Tamil Nadu, warning of severe weather conditions as a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression. This system is likely to develop into Cyclonic Storm ‘Fengal’ by today (November 27).
Impacted Regions and Predictions
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in districts including Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengelpet, and Cuddalore. In response to the this, holidays have been declared for schools in affected areas like Chennai, Chengelpet, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai. Schools and colleges in Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Tiruvarur will also remain shut due to the adverse weather.

Rainfall Alerts
The IMD has issued alerts to different districts:
- Red Alert: Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai on Wednesday, November 27.
- Yellow Alert: Chennai has been placed under a yellow alert for heavy rain, beginning today and will continue till Friday.
- Orange and Yellow Alerts: Neighboring districts such as Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Chengelpet have been issued a combination of yellow and orange alerts, with warnings extending from Wednesday to Saturday.
Light to moderate rainfall is expected to be widespread across the region, with intermittent heavy rains continuing until Thursday, November 28. The Tamil Nadu government is closely monitoring the situation, urging citizens to stay updated through official advisories. The IMD has also stated that the cyclonic system is gaining strength in the Bay of Bengal and is likely to make landfall in the coming days. This can bring strong winds, flooding, and disruptions to transportation and infrastructure in the affected regions. Local emergency services are on standby to respond to any incidents arising from the worsening weather.
