Congress’s Supriya Shrinate Takes a Jibe on FM Sitharaman’s take on Unemployment and Rich-Poor Gap

In a recent Podcast of Think School ‘The Indian Business Podcast’, Nirmala Sitharaman, Finance Minister of India, was asked a variety of questions on the obstacles that our Indian economy faces in recent times from ‘Rich-Poor’ disparity, GST to Unemployment. Congress didn’t spare a chance to take Jibe on her responses.

Nirmala Sitharaman has served as the Finance Minister of India from 2019 to present in the PM Modi Cabinet. On June 10, she was retained for the ministry, the second time, following the victory of the BJP-led NDA alliance in the recent Lok Sabha Elections. Earlier she has also served as a Defence Minister of India.

Increasing Poverty and the growing gap between the rich and poor, where rich are becoming richer and poor are becoming poorer, despite the Indian economy being the fastest growing economy in the world. Nirmala Sitharam was asked about the possible reasons for these growing disparity between rich and poor.

Ms. Sitharaman answers “I think there is a clear disconnect between the qualifications that you acquire the education levels to reach that the kind of jobs that are available and also the skill sets that required don't seem to matter in the higher education centres “

Further, she was asked about the growing unemployment rate in India, particularly why 30% MBA and 35% Engineering students are still unemployed even after being educated.

She responded, “There are now online or offline courses available for you to be able to equip yourself better.”

Taking a Jibe on these responses, Congress Spokesperson Supriya Shrinate argued that “ when India’s Finance Minister was asked two questions on Unemployment and ‘Rich-Poor Gap’, any of her responses made no sense at all.”
