Karnataka Doctor Death Case: Husband Killed, Son Stabbed; Wife Allegedly Found Scrolling Phone Beside Victims

A shocking murder inside a residential apartment in Karnataka's Dharwad has left the medical fraternity and local residents reeling. A 45-year-old anaesthesiologist was found stabbed to death inside his home, while his eight-year-old son was discovered critically injured with multiple stab wounds. The case has drawn widespread attention after police said the doctor's wife—also a medical professional—was found inside the apartment allegedly using her mobile phone beside the victims when officers arrived.

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crime, with the victim's wife currently being questioned. Investigators have, however, stressed that the probe is ongoing and that no final conclusions have been drawn regarding motive or culpability.

Karnataka doctor murder

Doctor found dead inside Dharwad apartment

The deceased has been identified as Dr. Kiran Honannavar, a 45-year-old anaesthesiologist associated with Chirayu Hospital in Dharwad. According to police, Dr. Honannavar was found lying in a pool of blood inside his apartment with multiple stab injuries.

His eight-year-old son was found alive but severely injured in another part of the residence. The child, who reportedly has special needs, sustained multiple stab wounds and was immediately shifted to a private hospital, where he continues to receive treatment.

The gruesome discovery was made after family members and acquaintances became concerned when they were unable to contact Dr. Honannavar for an extended period. According to reports, repeated phone calls went unanswered, prompting relatives to visit the apartment, where the horrific scene unfolded.

Wife detained for questioning

Police have taken Dr. Honannavar's wife, Dr. Priyanka, an ophthalmologist by profession, into custody for questioning as part of the investigation.

According to initial police accounts, she was the only other adult present in the apartment at the time the bodies were discovered. Officers reportedly found her seated inside the residence allegedly scrolling through her mobile phone near her injured son and deceased husband.

Investigators also stated that her responses during preliminary questioning appeared inconsistent and incoherent, prompting further examination of her role in the incident. However, police have not formally announced any charges, emphasizing that the investigation remains in its early stages.

No signs of forced entry

One of the key aspects emerging from the investigation is the apparent absence of any forced entry into the apartment.

Police officials said there were no indications that outsiders had broken into the residence. Doors and entry points showed no signs of tampering, leading investigators to believe that whoever was involved in the incident likely had access to the home or was known to the family.

Forensic experts have examined the crime scene, while investigators are analysing physical evidence, digital records and witness statements to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Alleged insulin injection under investigation

Investigators have also revealed that Dr. Priyanka allegedly injected herself with insulin after the incident and was later admitted for medical treatment.

Police are trying to determine whether the insulin injection was intended as self-harm, an attempt to evade questioning, or was linked to another medical condition. Officials have clarified that this aspect is also being examined as part of the broader investigation and that medical reports will play an important role in establishing the timeline of events.

Timeline leading to the discovery

According to reports, concerns first arose when relatives and colleagues failed to establish contact with Dr. Honannavar.

When family members called the residence, Dr. Priyanka reportedly informed them at different times that her husband was resting and later claimed he had gone to work. As communication remained unsuccessful, relatives eventually visited the apartment.

Upon entering the flat, they discovered Dr. Honannavar lying motionless with multiple stab injuries, while his son was found critically wounded nearby. Emergency services and police were immediately alerted.

Son undergoing treatment

The couple's eight-year-old son remains hospitalised and is receiving treatment for serious stab injuries.

Medical authorities have not disclosed detailed information regarding his condition, but reports indicate that doctors are closely monitoring his recovery. The child's statement, if and when he becomes medically fit, could prove crucial in helping investigators piece together the events inside the apartment.

Police have refrained from commenting on whether the child was a direct witness to the attack.

Police investigating motive

At present, investigators have not officially disclosed a motive behind the killing.

Authorities are examining multiple angles, including domestic issues, family dynamics, electronic devices, call records and forensic evidence. Police officials have urged the public not to speculate until the investigation reaches a definitive conclusion.

Crime scene experts have collected biological samples and other forensic evidence, while officers continue questioning individuals connected to the family.

Medical fraternity in shock

The incident has sent shockwaves through Dharwad's medical community, where both Dr. Kiran Honannavar and Dr. Priyanka were known professionals.

Colleagues described Dr. Honannavar as an experienced anaesthesiologist dedicated to patient care. The brutal nature of the crime has left fellow doctors and residents stunned, with many expressing grief over the tragedy involving both a respected physician and his young son.

The case has also reignited discussions about domestic violence, mental health and the hidden conflicts that can exist behind seemingly stable family lives. However, investigators have cautioned against drawing conclusions before all evidence is examined.

Investigation continues

Police officials have confirmed that the investigation remains active and several forensic and medical reports are still awaited.

Authorities are expected to analyse mobile phones, CCTV footage from the residential complex, digital communications and other evidence to establish an accurate timeline. Statements from relatives, neighbours and hospital staff are also being recorded.

As the probe progresses, investigators hope the combination of forensic findings, witness testimony and digital evidence will clarify what transpired inside the Dharwad apartment and determine whether criminal charges will be filed.

For now, the death of Dr. Kiran Honannavar and the critical injuries suffered by his young son remain at the centre of one of Karnataka's most disturbing criminal investigations in recent months. Police continue to urge restraint against speculation, maintaining that the facts will emerge only after the investigation is completed.
