Living in the Dark: The Untold Story of Kashmir's Wanadji Village

In an era where "Digital India" is rapidly expanding with 5G networks and smartphones, there exists a village where time seems to have stood still for centuries. Wanadji, a remote village nestled at an altitude of 12,000 feet in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, has never seen a single electric bulb.

Key Highlights of the Ground Reality:

• A Village Forgotten: Since independence, five generations of Wanadji have lived in complete darkness. The village lacks not only electricity but also basic infrastructure like proper roads and medical facilities.

• The Daily Struggle: To do something as simple as charging a mobile phone or a power bank, villagers are forced to trek 45 kilometers on foot, descending from the mountains to the nearest town.

• Health Hazards: As soon as the sun sets, the villagers rely on burning 'diyar' (pine wood) torches for light. The continuous inhalation of the toxic black smoke emitted from these wooden torches is causing severe respiratory illnesses, particularly affecting children and the elderly.

• Plea for Help: Despite repeated requests to local authorities, the villagers continue to wait for basic amenities. The residents are urging the administration to provide them with at least solar panels or a mini-hydroelectric project to light up their homes.
