Pune Metro Phase-1 Expansion Approved: Swargate to Katraj Line to Enhance Connectivity

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Swargate to Katraj Underground Line Extension as part of Pune Metro Phase-I. This extension, known as the Line-1B extension, will span 5.46 kilometers and include three underground stations. It aims to enhance connectivity across key areas in southern Pune, linking Market Yard, Bibwewadi, Balaji Nagar, and the Katraj suburbs. The project, which aligns with the city’s broader urban development goals, is scheduled for completion by February 2029.

Boosting Connectivity and Reducing Traffic Congestion

The newly approved extension will be a vital addition to Pune's metro network, connecting the southernmost parts of the city to the northern and eastern regions via the District Court interchange station. It is designed to integrate seamlessly with the Swargate Multimodal Hub, which includes a Metro Station, MSRTC Bus Stand, and PMPML Bus Stand, thus enhancing accessibility for both local and intercity commuters.

By linking several residential areas, educational institutions, business hubs, and recreational centers such as the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Taljai Hillock (Tekdi), the Swargate to Katraj line will offer a faster and more economical transportation option. The extension is expected to significantly reduce road traffic congestion, providing a safer and more comfortable travel experience. This is especially important for students, small business owners, and professionals commuting to various parts of the city. Moreover, by minimizing pollution and travel time, the project supports Pune’s sustainable urban development goals.

The projected daily ridership for the Swargate-Katraj line is estimated to reach 95,000 passengers by 2027, with further growth expected in the following decades. These estimates highlight the crucial role this extension will play in shaping the future of Pune’s public transportation landscape.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The Swargate to Katraj Underground Line Extension is set to cost Rs. 2954.53 crore, with funding equally shared by the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra, along with contributions from bilateral agencies. The project will be executed by Maha-Metro, which will oversee civil, electro-mechanical, and other associated works. Maha-Metro has already commenced pre-bid activities, with contracts expected to be floated for bidding shortly.

This strategic expansion is expected to unlock Pune's economic potential by significantly boosting the city’s infrastructure. The improved connectivity is anticipated to attract investments and foster economic growth, particularly in the southern parts of Pune. Additionally, the project aligns with broader sustainability goals by promoting the use of public transport, thereby reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
