On February 25th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's longest cable-stayed bridge, the Sudarshan Setu, spanning 2.32 km and linking Beyt Dwarka island to mainland Okha in Gujarat's Devbhumi Dwarka district.
PM Modi started the day by offering prayers at the Lord Sri Krishna temple at Beyt Dwarka and Dwarkadhish temple before the bridge inauguration ceremony.
Sudarshan Setu
As per a statement released by the Devbhumi Dwarka administration, 'Sudarshan Setu', the 2.32 km bridge, consisting of a central double-span cable-stayed section spanning 900 meters and a 2.45 km long approach road. The bridge, constructed for Rs 979 crore, boasts a width of 27.20 meters and features 2.50-meter-wide footpaths on both sides.
The 'Sudarshan Setu', a four-lane cable-stayed bridge, showcases a distinctive design, incorporating a pedestrian walkway embellished with verses from Srimad Bhagavad Gita and depictions of Lord Krishna on either side.
As per reports, it was originally known as the 'Signature Bridge,' later renamed 'Sudarshan Setu' or Sudarshan Bridge, as confirmed by District Magistrate (DM) GT Pandya
In October 2017, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the bridge, emphasising its role as a connection between old and new Dwarka.
Beyt Dwarka
Beyt Dwarka, an island near to Okha port and approximately 30 kilometres away from Dwarka town, hosts the renowned Dwarkadhish temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.
Currently, devotees visiting the temple are limited to daytime boat trips. However, officials anticipate that upon the bridge's completion, devotees will have unrestricted access to the temple, allowing for round-the-clock visits.
PM Modi’s Other Plans in Gujarat
Following the ceremony, the PM is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation for several projects in Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Porbandar districts. These projects include the electrification of a 533-kilometre railway line and the inauguration of two offshore pipelines under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at Vadinar.
Today, in the afternoon, the Prime Minister will inaugurate Gujarat's inaugural All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rajkot. Additionally, he will virtually inaugurate four other recently constructed All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) campuses in Bathinda (Punjab), Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh), Kalyani (West Bengal), and Mangalagiri (Andhra Pradesh) during a public event in Rajkot. All five super-speciality hospitals, have been built by the Centre at the cost of Rs 6,300 crore
This evening, PM Modi is anticipated to participate in a massive roadshow in the city.
