Patient Dies Hours After Ceiling Fan Falls on Bed in GTB Hospital Emergency Ward; Family Alleges Negligence

Tragic Incident at Delhi's GTB Hospital: Patient Dies Hours After Ceiling Fan Collapses

A shocking incident has emerged from Delhi's Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, raising severe concerns over infrastructure and patient safety in government healthcare facilities. A 42-year-old patient named Akbar tragically died less than three hours after a ceiling fan detached and fell on his bed inside the emergency ward.

Key Details of the Incident:

  • The Mishap: On Saturday night, around 9:30 PM, a ceiling fan in Emergency Ward 27 suddenly came loose and fell directly onto the patient's bed. A nursing officer attending to the patient also reportedly sustained injuries during the incident.

  • Family's Allegations: The deceased patient's family and eyewitnesses have alleged gross negligence regarding maintenance and patient safety on the part of the hospital administration, and they have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation.

  • Hospital's Stance: GTB Hospital authorities strongly denied that the falling fan caused the patient's death. According to their official statement, the patient was admitted on July 18 in a critical state and passed away due to severe underlying illnesses, including uncontrolled hypertension and aspiration pneumonia.

  • Safety Concerns Raised: Attendants of other patients pointed out the poor maintenance of the ward, alleging that many air-conditioners were either non-functional or had missing parts, leaving ceiling fans as the primary source of ventilation.

This tragic event has once again ignited debates on the safety standards and quality of patient care in public hospitals.
