On Monday, Curfew was imposed in the Balasore town of Odisha following violent clashes between two groups. Internet services were also suspended in sensitive areas to prevent the spread of misinformation.
Balasore SP Sagarika Nath, stated that "All commercial establishments and shops will remain closed."
The curfew, which began at midnight on June 17, will last until midnight on June 18. Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors, and leave housed only in any medical emergency.
About the Violence
The unrest began in the Bhujakhia Pir area when a group staged a dharna, protesting against the blood of an animal sacrifice left on the road. The protest escalated when another group allegedly hurled stones at the demonstrators, leading to a violent confrontation.
Talking to a local, 41, he said, the violence has a communal angle to it. He added Section 144 affected areas are from patrapada to banka khajuri.
Authorities Response
Newly elected Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi spoke with Balasore Collector Ashish Thakare. Acting swiftly on CM Majhi’s order to restore peace, Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order) Sanjay Kumar has been stationed in Balasore to oversee the situation.
Police have since conducted a flag march through the town to assert control and reassure the public. 30 people in connection with the violence have been arrested so far.
Senior police official said, "Adequate police arrangements in the sensitive areas have been made and the situation is getting under control though some sporadic violence was reported in some places yesterday.”
