NPP Withdraws Support for BJP Govt. in Manipur
The NPP, led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, has decided to withdraw its support to the BJP-led government in Manipur. It passed a resolution over the rising violence and unrest in the state which has been ongoing since ethnic conflicts started in May 2023. The party said that CM N. Biren Singh had "completely failed" to solve the crisis wherein the law and order situation in the state is progressively deteriorating.
Apprehensions over Law and Order
In a letter to BJP President J.P. Nadda, the NPP pointed out that violence has recently spurted there resulting in the death of many innocent people. Sangma said that the people are suffering really at the hands of the government for not being able to restore the peace situation. The withdrawal of NPP assumes huge importance but will not impact the majority of BJP in the 60-member assembly where BJP holds 32 in which other allies sustain it.
Opposition Voices Growing Louder
Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh of Congress also has some attack on the Biren Singh Government. He alleged that the administrative system is in complete collapse, and unless Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes note of the matter soon, the non-NDA MLAs will all resign en masse. Singh called for the immediate meeting of the PM to raise the growing crisis.
Recent Violent Protests
The situation worsened over the weekend with violent protests erupting in Imphal following reports of six people, including women and children, being abducted by suspected Kuki-Zo militants. Agitation went on to damage properties owned by a number of MLAs as angry mobs attacked their homes. The security forces were out there to bring the situation under control while curfews were enforced in several districts.
Going Forward with Continued Tensions and the Government's Response
Tension has reportedly continued to simmer, with reports emerging that calm has returned to Imphal. Union Home Minister Amit Shah met security officials to take stock of the situation and was learnt to review the review process. On the other hand, Kuki-Zo organizations accused each other of arson attacks on their properties, further exacerbating communal tensions.
The withdrawal of support by the NPP is an indication of growing discontent, amongst other political friends, over the way violence in Manipur has been handled. When ethnic strife persists, doubts arise regarding the existing leadership and strategies of governance. Decisive action by both state and central governments will prove to be the only hope in bringing back peace and order.
