NEET 2024 Row: Around 52% attendance in the NEET-UG Retest

On June 23, the NEET-UG retest was held in six different cities, for 1,563 candidates, in response to claims of abnormalities, including paper leaks, in the medical entrance tests. The National Testing Agency (NTA) declared in a statement that 48% of students who were supposed to retake the NEET-UG today did not show up. According to figures supplied by the NTA, 813 (52%) of 1,563 students gave the retest, while 750 skipped it. 

NEET 2024 Latest Updates: 

  • More than two dozen students, some of whom were NSUI members, were detained on Monday at Jantar Mantar during a protest against irregularities in the NEET-UG and the cancellation of the UGC-NET exams. The National Students' Union of India, affiliated with the Congress, organized a march towards the Parliament on the day of the commencement of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha.

  • The high-level panel appointed by the Union Education Ministry to assess the National Testing Agency's operations and make recommendations for exam improvements is scheduled to meet today, June 24. Amid the dispute regarding anomalies in competitive examinations, the ministry on Saturday informed a seven-member panel led by the former chief of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), K Radhakrishnan, to guarantee a transparent, seamless, and fair administration of exams via the National Testing Agency (NTA).
  • Today, the Rajasthan High Court sent notices to the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Center seeking their responses to petitions calling for the NEET-UG to be cancelled. July 10 was the day set by the Supreme Court for the hearing. The NEET-UG 2024 exam cancellation and a court-monitored probe are among the similar petitions that the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on July 8.
  • On Monday, a CBI team is scheduled to arrive in Patna. According to officials, they may bring individuals detained in the NEET-UG paper leak case to Delhi for interrogation.
  • Approximately 52% of the 1,563 candidates who were scheduled to take the NEET UG retest, or 813 students, showed up for the retest. A revised score will be given to the students who took the exam. However, the original score—that is, the score without the grace marks—will now be given to the students who did not take the retest.

  • According to the Bihar Police, 18 people have been taken into custody concerning the case by the Economic Offenses Unit (EOU) thus far. Officers from the CBI are probably going to gather case-related information from the EOU, which was looking into the issue before the federal agency's Center requested an inquiry.

  • According to an official on Sunday, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested two teachers who own a private coaching centre in the Latur district. The arrests are related to the alleged anomalies in the NEET-UG medical entrance exam.

CBI takes over the NEET Paper leak case

On Sunday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) assumed the duty of investigating the claimed irregularities in the NEET-UG examination and assigned teams in multiple states for inquiries.  In the NEET-UG case, the Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a formal complaint (FIR) under sections 20-B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating). Five individuals who were being held in Deoghar, Jharkhand, were taken into custody by the Patna police on Sunday night. The people being accused are all Nalanda residents - Paramjeet Singh, Rajeev Kumar, Panku Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, and Baldev Kumar. Additionally, on Sunday, the governments of Gujarat and Bihar released notifications directing respective police departments to forward NEET-UG paper leak cases to the CBI.

NEET PG Postponement

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) had decided to postpone the NEET-PG exams due to the controversy surrounding supposed irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance (NEET)-Undergraduate exam 2024, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Health on Saturday.
