Mauritius 1st in Jan Aushadhi: Mauritian PM in Agalega Airstrip Inauguration

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth jointly inaugurated the new Airstrip and St. James Jetty, alongside six transformative community development projects on Agalega Island. PM Modi and the Indian-origin PM of Mauritius convened via video conferencing on Thursday, marking a significant step towards enhancing connectivity, maritime security, and socio-economic progress, the Prime Minister's Office stated. PM Modi expressed joy in fulfilling his 2015 promise to the people of Agalega, now termed "Modi ki Guarantee" in India. He emphasised that the jointly inaugurated facilities would enhance ease of living, improving connectivity between the North and Southern parts of Mauritius as well as administrative connections with the mainland, consequently enhancing medical evacuation and school transportation services.

The Agalega connectivity project will link mainland Mauritius with the strategic Agalega Island. This development will not only fortify maritime security but also pave the way for substantial socio-economic advancements, propelling both nations towards prosperity and sustainable growth.

Prime Minister Jugnauth announced that Mauritius has become the first nation to adopt India’s esteemed ‘Jan Aushadhi Scheme.’ With access to approximately 250 high-quality medicines sourced from India, Mauritius sets a precedent for affordable and quality healthcare solutions, benefiting citizens across the nation.The pair recently launched UPI and RuPay Card services in Mauritius. 

Highlighting the robust partnership over the last decade, Prime Minister Modi underscored India's commitment to Mauritius' development journey. With a credit line of 1,000 million US dollars and 400 million US dollars in assistance, India has contributed significantly to critical infrastructure projects, including metro rail lines, social housing, and healthcare facilities. He remarked that India has been fortunate to contribute to the development of metro rail lines, community development projects, social housing, the ENT Hospital, the Civil Service College, and sports complex infrastructure in Mauritius.

Moreover, the inauguration of the Agalega airstrip and jetty offered a pivotal moment in bilateral cooperation. By strengthening joint efforts in monitoring Exclusive Economic Zones, conducting joint patrols, hydrography, and humanitarian assistance, both nations reaffirm their commitment to regional stability and prosperity, the PM said on Thursday.
