Massive Landslide Destroys ₹5 Crore Bridge in Himachal Just Before Completion

A vital infrastructure project in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district was reduced to debris on Tuesday morning after a landslide brought down an under-construction bridge on the Holi-Kharamukha road, officials confirmed. The incident occurred near Sinyur in the Bharmaur assembly constituency, just as the structure was nearing completion.

Himachal Pradesh bridge collapse

Despite the scale of the collapse, authorities reported no casualties, offering a measure of relief amid the destruction.

The bridge, a ₹5 crore project, had been under construction for over a year after its tender was issued in 2023. It was designed to serve as a crucial all-weather alternative route to the remote Holi region, which is frequently cut off during the monsoon season due to recurring landslides. The loss of the nearly completed structure now raises concerns about connectivity for isolated communities that depend heavily on such infrastructure.

Local MLA Janak Raj said he has directed the concerned departments to inspect the site and assess the damage. Speaking to the media, he emphasized the strategic importance of the bridge, noting that it would have significantly improved transport access to Holi, an area notorious for being cut off during heavy rains.

“This bridge would have provided an alternate all-weather route to Holi, which gets cut off due to frequent landslides during the monsoon,” he said.

The collapse was triggered when a portion of the hillside gave way, sending debris crashing onto the structure. Eyewitness videos capturing the exact moment the bridge crumbled have since gone viral across social media platforms, drawing widespread attention to the incident and raising questions about infrastructure resilience in landslide-prone regions.

Footage shows the structure succumbing within seconds under the force of the sliding earth, highlighting the vulnerability of construction projects in mountainous terrain, particularly during unstable weather conditions.

The destruction of the bridge represents not just a financial setback—effectively wiping out an investment of ₹5 crore—but also a significant blow to ongoing efforts to strengthen road connectivity in the region. With construction having progressed steadily for more than a year, the collapse is expected to delay critical transport improvements and disrupt plans aimed at easing access for residents.

Officials are now expected to conduct a detailed inspection of the wreckage to determine the extent of the damage and evaluate the next steps. The incident also underscores the persistent challenge of landslides in Himachal Pradesh, especially during the monsoon, when infrastructure projects often face heightened risks.

For now, while the absence of casualties has been a relief, the loss of a nearly completed bridge has left local communities once again grappling with the uncertainty of unreliable road access.
