Maharashtra has been grappling with heavy rainfall for the past few days, and the situation is expected to intensify. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more intense rainfall at isolated places across the state. The next few days will see significant weather activity, particularly in Mumbai, its suburbs, and other key regions.
Immediate Weather Alerts and Impacts
The IMD has issued several alerts across Maharashtra. Heavy spells of rain are very likely in Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, and Sindhudurg within the next three hours. A yellow alert has been declared for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Nashik, warning residents of heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds.

For Pune, an Orange alert signifies even more severe weather conditions, while Ratnagiri has been placed under a red alert, indicating the highest level of rainfall. The Konkan & Goa regions and the Ghat areas of Madhya are also expected to experience heavy downpours over the next two days.
School Closures in Response to Extreme Weather
The education department in Goa has responded to the heavy rainfall by declaring a holiday for schools on Monday, July 15. This decision aims to ensure the safety of students amid the severe weather conditions. Similarly, the Raigad district administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Mahad, Poladpur, and Mangaon talukas due to an upgraded Red Alert following heavy rains on Sunday. The Red Alert for Raigad remains in effect until 7 pm today, with an Orange Alert continuing until July 16.
Rising Water Stocks in Mumbai
Mumbai's water stocks have notably increased due to the constant rainfall over the past week. The water stocks in the seven lakes supplying water to the city rose by 10 percent, pushing the levels ahead of last year’s figures. As of July 15, the water stock stands at 35.11 percent of capacity, up from 25 percent just two days earlier. This increase is significant compared to last year when water stocks were at 31.16 percent during the same period.

Water Supply and Consumption
In the last week of May, water levels in all seven lakes dipped below 10 percent, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to impose water cuts, which increased from 5 percent to 10 percent. With the recent rains, the situation has improved, but the city still relies on reserved water from Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna to meet demand. Currently, Mumbai receives 3,850 million liters per day (MLD) from the seven lakes, while the actual demand is around 4,500 MLD.

The recent rainfall has significantly increased water levels across various regions. In the Raigad district, Mahad taluka received 193 mm of rain, Mangaon taluka 141 mm, and Poladpur taluka 151 mm in the last 24 hours. The IMD has forecasted continued heavy to very heavy rainfall for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar on July 15, 16, and 17, which may result in waterlogging and potential flooding in the Northern and Eastern areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). An aggregate of 400-450 mm of rain is expected over these three days.
