Karnataka Bitcoin scam: ex-Bengaluru Crime Branch officer accused of assaulting SIT personnel

A Bengaluru police officer who has been mentioned in a Bitcoin scam-related case has been accused of attempting to murder a member of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) while attempting to apprehend him on Tuesday.

The Karnataka Criminal Investigation Department SIT wants to question K Sridhar Poojar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, who was the original investigating officer when a hacker named Srikrishna Ramesh alias Sriki was arrested by the Bengaluru police Central Crime Branch in November 2020 for buying drugs on the darknet.

The Case hearing

Poojar's anticipatory release in a Bitcoin scam case was denied on February 23 by a special court. After his bail appeal was denied by the special court, he has been trying to petition the Karnataka High Court for anticipatory bail.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Bhaskar Ramu, who was assigned to detain Poojar concerning the case, has complained to the Bengaluru police that the officer drove his car away when the ASI tried to stop him. A formal complaint has been filed by the Vidhana Soudha police under the provisions of criminal intimidation, attempt to murder, and impeding the performance of official responsibilities by a public servant.

After Poojar's bail was refused last week and the SIT learned that the officer was close to the Bengaluru civil court, Ramu and Inspector Anil Kumar were sent this week to capture the man. But Poojar destroyed the policemen's motorbike and ran away.

About the case

According to reports, Poojar was pursued and later located by police officers near the Coffee Board intersection in central Bengaluru. While the ASI tried to stop him, the officer drove his car away.

In the First Information Report (FIR) dated January 24, the SIT has accused Poojar, inspectors Prashanth Babu, Chandradhar S R, and Lakshmikanthaiah, as well as a private cyber expert K S Santhosh Kumar, who helped with the hacker's case investigation in 2020, of illegal confinement, breach of trust, and evidence destruction.

On January 24, the SIT detained Babu and Santhosh Kumar; on February 23, they were given bail. On Wednesday, Chandradhar filed a motion for anticipatory bail as the SIT detained Lakshmikanthaiah.

The IPS officer who served as the supervisory officer during the purported Bitcoin scam was also interviewed by the SIT last week. Sandeep Patil, the joint commissioner of police (crime) during the time of the purported Bitcoin fraud, has refuted any involvement in the purported crime involving personnel from the Crime Branch.
