The Manipur government has ordered the closure of all state-run educational institutions, including universities, in Imphal West and Imphal East districts. The decision, effective until Tuesday, comes amidst rising tensions following the discovery of six bodies near the Manipur-Assam border.
The state's Higher and Technical Education Department issued a notice stating, "In view of the curfew imposed by the District Magistrate in multiple districts and considering the safety of students and teachers, all government institutions and universities in the affected districts shall remain closed from November 18 to November 19."
Internet Suspended and Security Heightened
In response to escalating ethnic tensions, the Biren Singh-led BJP government has suspended internet services in seven districts to prevent misinformation and further unrest. Security has been reinforced around key locations, including the Chief Minister’s residence and the Raj Bhavan. Vehicle movement remains restricted in curfew-affected areas.
Curfew Imposed After Bodies Found
The closure of institutions and internet suspension follow the discovery of three bodies, suspected to be among six missing individuals from Jiribam district. Demonstrations erupted after the gruesome find, with protestors setting vehicles ablaze, leading to increased curfews across multiple districts.
NIA Steps in to Investigate Violence
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over three critical cases linked to the recent ethnic violence under directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
-
Case 1: Registered at Jiribam Police Station on November 8, concerning the murder of a woman by armed militants.
- Case 2: Registered at Borobekra Police Station on November 11, linked to an attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) post in Jakuradhor Karong.
- Case 3: Also registered at Borobekra Police Station on November 11, related to the burning of houses and killing of civilians in the Borobekra area.
These incidents have resulted in loss of lives and widespread disruption in public order, prompting the anti-terror agency to take charge of the investigations.
Government Faces Growing Pressure
As the situation worsens, the opposition has called for the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, holding him accountable for the deteriorating situation in Manipur. The state continues to grapple with deepening ethnic divides and security challenges.
