Fire at commercial complex in Dhaka kills 45, injures 22

At least 45 people have died and 22 more have been injured in a fire at a six-story retail mall in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, according to Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen. The Dhaka downtown fire, which started late on Thursday night, startled the country and sparked concerns about fire safety regulations in commercial buildings. 

 

In the middle of the city's busy commercial district, firefighters put forth a lot of effort to save lives and recover bodies from the burning structure. The fires were claimed to have originated in a well-known restaurant located on the mall's first floor, trapping numerous people inside. Investigations are ongoing to determine what started the fire.

Sen has confirmed that the Dhaka Medical College Hospital proclaimed at least 33 people dead, including women and children, in the horrific occurrence that has had a lasting effect on the community. Following their transfer to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, ten more people tragically died.

With incident service and Civil Defence Director General Brig. Gen. Md. Main Uddin spearheading the response efforts, authorities sent out more than a dozen firefighting units to tackle the incident at the Green Cosy Cottage Shopping Mall. Among the more than 75 people that rescuers pulled from the building, 42 were unconscious.

Dhaka's commercial buildings' safety standards continue to be questioned as the country laments the deaths of its citizens and offers prayers for the healing of the injured. It is imperative that public places have appropriate emergency preparedness and fire safety measures in place in light of the sad tragedy.
