ED challenges Hemant Soren's bail in the Supreme Court

On July 8, the Jharkhand High Court's bail decision for Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) executive president Hemant Soren was challenged in the Supreme Court by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which claimed that the release order was unjust and unlawful. According to an ED source, the agency moved SC after consultations with its legal counsel.

"We are prepared for the worst and have the right strategies in place for any developing situation," a source in the Soren government stated.

Soren faced charges of obtaining 8.5 acres of land illegally in Ranchi's Baragain Circle and of participating in a plot to conceal the property's "untainted" status to launder the money obtained from the crime. However, on June 28, the High Court granted him bail, finding that there was "reason to believe" that he was innocent of the money laundering charge related to the purported land schemes.

On July 4, Hemant Soren resumed his position as chief minister of Jharkhand, having obtained bail from the high court. He resigned on January 31 following detention by the ED. Champai Soren, an important ally and sitting minister, took over as leader of the ruling coalition on the same day and remained so till Hemant Soren was in jail.
