Diwali is known as the festival of light. It is celebrated enthusiastically all over India. People light diyas, clean up their homes, decorate the homes, eat sweets and burst crackers to mark that light has emerged victorious in the battle of darkness. However, due to air pollution, health hazards, and safety issues over the last few years, some Indian states have banned ťreworks during this festive season. We will notice a variety of measures adopted by the different states of India.
1. Delhi: The most polluted city in India, Delhi is the ťrst state that springs to mind when discussing the ban on ťreworks. The Government of Delhi has imposed a complete ban on the manufacture, storage, sale (including e-selling and offline), and use of ťrecrackers within the revenue district of Delhi, with effect until January 1, 2025. It includes permissions for the emission of "green crackers," less harmful to the environment, which will only be allowed between 8 PM and 10 PM on Diwali.
2. Maharashtra: The government of Maharashtra has allowed using only green crackers in the state. Besides these, the Mumbai Police have also banned the sale and use of sky lanterns from October 23 to November 24. Smaller green crackers that are allowed to be used have been manufactured to emit fewer pollutants, easing the air quality concern throughout the state.
3. Madhya Pradesh: In Jabalpur, authorities have imposed a ban on harmful ťreworks containing arsenic, lithium, barium salt, mercury, and antimony in the district during the festive season. Only green crackers are allowed within limited hours, with restrictions on heavy sound bombs as well as in public places like hospitals.
4. Bihar: The Nitish-led government has imposed a complete ban on ťreworks in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya, and Hajipur, while only green crackers are allowed in the other districts of Bihar.
5. Karnataka: Till now, the government has not issued any ban on crackers but has requested people to use only green ťre crackers in Diwali and to avoid bursting ťre crackers between 8 PM-10 PM.
6. Punjab: The government of Punjab has imposed strict rules on bursting ťre crackers. The Punjab government has also issued notice on timings for bursting green crackers in Diwali with the upcoming festivals like Gurpurab, Christmas, as well as New Year.
7. Haryana: The Haryana government has issued the permission to burst only green crackers in Diwali between 8 PM-10 PM, imposing a ban on all harmful crackers.
8. Kerala: The government has imposed a ban on the usage of ťreworks for Diwali with only usage of green crackers and also restricted the usage of ťreworks on Christmas as well as New Year with timings between 8PM-10PM.
9. Tamil Nadu: The Stalin-led government has restricted the usage of ťre crackers by introducing the speciťc timings for bursting crackers between 6 AM-7 AM and 7 PM-8 PM.
10. West Bengal: The only use of green crackers is allowed with an allowed timing of 8 PM–10 PM on Diwali in Kolkata.
