The intense heat wave waving across Delhi has increased heat-related deaths, with at least 20 reported in the last 48 hours. Six of these deaths occurred in central government hospitals, with the remainder occurring in Delhi government-run facilities.
The actual toll could be higher, as several hospitals have reported numerous "brought dead" cases. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital (DDUH) alone received 27 unidentified bodies in the last two days, most likely as a result of the extreme heat. RML Hospital reported four recent deaths, two of which occurred early Wednesday morning. Safdarjung Hospital reported two deaths on Wednesday, bringing the total number of heat-related deaths to six.
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj confirmed 14 heat-related deaths in the city over the last 48 hours. At least 52 people died as a result of the summer heatwave, according to reports from various healthcare facilities. DDUH had the highest number, with 27 cases.
The hospitals are struggling to handle the influx of heatstroke patients. Safdarjung Hospital admitted 33 new patients with severe heat-related illnesses, and RML Hospital admitted 26 more. To address the crisis, additional beds and ventilators are being added.
Authorities advise residents to take precautions and seek medical attention if they experience heat exhaustion symptoms. The heatwave has caused a significant health crisis, with many deaths possibly going unreported and attributed to the high temperatures.
With the severe heatwave in Delhi that has claimed numerous lives, it is critical to take precautions: stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, and seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or headache. The elderly, children, and people with chronic illnesses should be especially cautious.
