As the ongoing heatwave continues to scorch the city, residents of Delhi are bracing themselves for another day of scorching temperatures, with a predicted high of 45 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red signal for the area, advising residents to take appropriate precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
The Safdarjung observatory centre recorded a scorching 45.2 degrees Celsius on Monday, which is 6.4 degrees above the seasonal normal. It became intolerable for locals to go outside as the heat index, also known as the feels-like temperature, skyrocketed to an incredible 50 degrees Celsius.
People with chronic illnesses, the elderly, and babies are among the most vulnerable groups to these intense heatwaves. To avoid heat-related illnesses, it is imperative that everyone drink enough water, find shade, and refrain from physically demanding activities during the hours of maximum heat.
The weather office has predicted some relief starting on June 19, so there is, thankfully, a ray of optimism. The weather office predicts that the heatwave in North India will persist for the next few days, but an impending Western disturbance should gradually lessen the intense heat.
Residents should keep themselves informed, stay safe, and take all essential precautions to battle the heat as the city continues to swelter under the unrelenting heatwave. With Tuesday expected to be quite hot, locals should avoid excessive outdoor activity and drink plenty of water to avoid heat exhaustion or stroke.
