Delhi Police Booked over 16,800 For Defective Number Plates

According to official data, the Delhi police have booked nearly 16,859 people for defective number plates as of June 5. This year's figures are 286% more than the previous year's data for the corresponding period, which was 4,363. A senior police official stated that increasing prosecutions is part of a larger effort to improve road safety and enforce traffic restrictions. Defective number plates include those that are illegible, badly formatted or do not meet the required criteria.

"Delhi Police has deployed additional personnel and resources to monitor and apprehend the violators," an official reported.

He added that specific drives and checkpoints have been constructed across the city, with a focus on high-traffic locations as well as entry and exit points. Furthermore, the Delhi Traffic Police performed a thorough investigation of the top 10 traffic circles with the highest number of challans issued for incorrect number plates in 2024. According to the data, the most violations occurred in the traffic circles of Mayur Vihar (926), Nand Nagri (917), Khajuri Khas (845), Bhajan Pura (798), and Gandhi Nagar (699). The primary objective for pinpointing these specific places is to implement specific traffic regulation compliance techniques and enhance public awareness of their importance.

The standardised High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP)

  • The plate's upper-left corner should incorporate a chromium-based hot-stamped Ashoka Chakra emblem in the form of a blue hologram. It is expected to be precisely 20 mm long and 20 mm wide.
  • The plate should have the IND (India's international registration identification code) directly below the Ashok Chakra hologram, as per the CMVR (Central Motor Vehicle Rules).
  • It should also include a 10-digit Permanent Identification Number (PIN) carved in laser technology on the lower-left corner of the HSRP plate.
  • It should bear hot-stamped alphabets and numerals denoting the state code, district code, and a unique alpha-numeric identification number for a vehicle. Each numeral/alphabet is branded with a film containing the word “INDIA” at an angle of 45 degrees.

The standard number plate

Officials have stated that HSRP Number Plates can become faulty for a variety of causes, including regular wear and tear and failure to repair them. The use of several fonts and colours to make the plate more aesthetically pleasing might also render it faulty. A number plate with god pictures or community stickers might also be considered fancy. The challan for the use of these kinds of number plates is that of ₹5000. Implementation of the aforementioned requirements ensures that every registered number plate becomes a High-Security Registration Plate. Social media campaigns and coordination with automobile associations were initiated too, to educate vehicle owners on the legal requirements and potential fines for noncompliance.
