The Delhi government has announced that it will implement the odd-even vehicle rationing scheme from November 13 to November 20 in an effort to reduce air pollution. The decision comes as a spike in pollution is expected after the Deepavali festival.
Under the scheme, vehicles with even-numbered registration plates will be allowed to ply on even dates, while those with odd-numbered plates will be allowed on odd dates. In addition to this measure, the government has also decided to suspend in-person classes in all schools, except for students in grades X and XII who are preparing for board exams.
The announcement follows a declaration by the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) of several measures to control air pollution, including a ban on the entry of trucks into Delhi, with some exceptions.
The CAQM also suggested that state governments consider implementing an odd-even vehicle rationing system. These measures are part of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which outlines emergency measures to tackle air pollution.
Despite these efforts, air pollution in Delhi remains in the "severe" category, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The government will assess the situation after implementing the odd-even scheme and make decisions on future actions accordingly.
